Homework Due Week of May 5

Alright, folks, we’re in the home stretch! For next week, you’ll be completing your final:

May 6/8– Step 4 (100 major project pts.)

  • Make the edition of 3 books and bring them to class (instructor will keep one copy)
  • Bring your two mock-ups to class
  • Write a two-page self-evaluation using the questions from the website as a guide.
  • Revise and finalize production schedule
  • Produce final budget, with addition of final price for book and 1 paragraph explanation of why you’ve established that price (materials cost per book, value you’ve placed on your time, other considerations, etc.).

During our next class, you’ll be presenting your books and we’ll make it an open studio/studio party to celebrate all your hard work. I encourage you to bring snacks, drinks, and friends.

Homework Due Week of April 28

For next week, you will continue work on your final project:

  • Produce a revised mock-up using nearly 100% of the materials, text, and graphics (i.e., a very polished, nearly final draft). Your second mock-up should demonstrate significant improvement or evolution from the original. [40 points]
  • Write a double-spaced, one-page progress report explaining the reasons for any further changes or adaptations you have made. [20 points]
  • Revise your budget and production schedule to reflect any changes that will come  as a result of your discoveries [15 points]
  • Prepare for one-on-one meetings with instructor. You should bring BOTH mock-ups to your meeting.

Additionally, if you have not cased in your drum-leaf bound book, you will need to do so on your own at home.

Homework Due Week of April 21

Begin testing and developing your book. You should:

  • Produce at least one mock up of the book that includes the materials you intend to use as well as at least 50% of the text and graphics.  [40 points]
  • Write a double-spaced, one-page progress report explaining any changes to the plan–what worked, what didn’t, what you will change going forward. [20 points]
  • Revise your budget and production schedule to reflect any changes that will come  as a result of your discoveries [15 points]

Homework Due Week of April 14

For the next class, you should:

You must also continue work on the final project. I’m repeating the instructions from the assignment sheet here:

Due April 15/17 — Step 1 (50 Homework Points)
Write a double-spaced, two-page book plan explaining the following: [40 points]

  • Which author/piece of writing you will be working with and why
  • Which track you have chosen for the project
  • Your overall concept for the book (what form will you use, what effect are you trying to achieve, what is your intent for the final product)

You should also create the following:  [10 points]

  • A list of proposed materials and their estimated cost
  • A schedule for production.

For next class: bring basic hand tools
(needle, x-acto knife, glue brush, awl, bone folder)

Homework Due Week of March 31

As we continue working on your pamphlet and French-link stitch books, we’ll also be moving on to begin prepping for the exposed sewing books. So, for next week you need to:

  • Prep paper for exposed sewing/alternate binding styles
    • Drum leaf [20 sheets, folded in half singly]*
    • Coptic [32 sheets, fold into 8 signatures of 4]*

*both types will be folded “hamburger style”

Also, as a note, for the next class you should bring your text blocks and basic hand tools (needle, x-acto knife, glue brush, awl, bone folder). Remember, they’ll pretty much be standard from here on out.

Homework Due Week of March 24

So, you don’t have any homework over spring break. Hooray!

BUT:

  • If sewing and gluing of text blocks isn’t finished, you need do that at home before the next class. Remember, you also need to bring all your text blocks BACK to the next class.

Also, as a note, for the next class you should bring your text blocks and basic hand tools (needle, x-acto knife, glue brush, awl, bone folder). Remember, they’ll pretty much be standard from here on out.

Homework Due Week 7

For next week’s class, you need to:

  • Complete your midterm:
    • Make 10 copies of your book (remember, I’ll be keeping one copy)
    • Write your two-page (double spaced) reaction using the self-evaluation questions you’ll find here.
    • Bring in your two mock-ups to hand in
    • Bring in your FINALIZED budget and schedule (these are separate from the reaction)

Tools for next week: bring needles, glue brush, bone folder, awl (you’ll be wanting those basic tools from here on out, so just bring them every week).

Homework Due Week 6

Continue work on your mid-term:

Produce a revised mock-up using about 100% of the materials, text, and graphics (i.e., a very polished, nearly final draft). Your second mock-up should demonstrate significant improvement or evolution from the original. Write a one-page reaction explaining the reasons for any further changes or adaptations you have made. Bring in an updated and complete budget. (50 homework points)

Fold Signatures for Next Class

Next week we’ll begin working on sewn-signature bindings, which means you need signatures to sew. We’ll get started on this in class, but you will likely need to finish up at home. When you’re done, you should have:

  • 16 signatures with 4 sheets each

  • 3 signatures with 8 sheets each

I’d recommend separating them into envelopes or baggies or something so you can easily tell the 4-sheet signatures from the 8-sheet signatures.

Homework Due Week 5

Tuesday Class Version

  • One-page progress report + one rough mock up of book with text and graphics

Thursday Class Version (different due to snow day and resulting catch-up)

    • Write a one-page reaction to your process/experience
