Homework Due 3/14 (Thursday Class) and 3/26 (Tuesday Class)

For Class 8, please work on and prepare the following:

Homework and Materials Prep

  • Finish sewing, pressing and gluing any remaining text blocks
    • I will provide you one set of headbands and one piece of mull. If you wish to have these on your other text blocks, you will need to purchase your own and apply them before the next class. NOTE: The dos-a-dos book does NOT need headbands or mull.
  • Identify the following types of items to use for cover embellishment
    • Buttons, beads, or charms (small items–no larger than 2” x 2”– that can be sewn onto the cover of your quarter-cloth bound book). These can be 3D, but need to be relatively flat.
    • A small image (3” x 3”) that you want to frame on the cover your full cloth book.
  • Cut and prep materials for covers
    • Binder/Davey board (new or upcycled):
      • 8 pieces at 5.5” x 7.25”
      • 1 piece at 5 ⅜” x 7.25”
      • 1 piece at 3” x 7.25” [cut down in class for spine board]
    • Chipboard (possible alternative material–cereal box or similar light-weight cardboard)
      • 3 pieces at 5.5” x 7.25” [for bradel and cover embellishment]
    • Book cloth:
      • 4 pieces at 3” x 9”
      • 1 piece at 10” x 15”
    • Artist Paper (i.e. designed/decorative paper, can be handmade by you or purchased)
      • 2 pieces at 9” x 7”
      • 4 pieces at 5.5” x 9”
      • 1 piece at 3 ⅛” x 9”

Additional Tools you’ll need for the next class:

  • X-acto knife
  • Box cutter
  • Ruler
  • Cutting mat
  • PVA glue and brush
  • Bone folder
  • Needle and thread (not dental floss, as it will be visible on the outside of your book)
  • Don’t forget to bring the colored endpapers you’ve cut (10 sheets 7×11 colored paper), if you’re opting to include those in your books.
    • NOTE: originally, I asked you to cut 8 sheets, but have realized I made a mistake. Because the dos-a-dos is really two books in one, you need 10 sheets instead of 8. My apologies!
